Staying Focused and Present: A Lesson from Jesus and Zacchaeus

In today’s fast-paced world, staying focused and present can feel like a challenge. Distractions pull us in every direction, making it hard to fully engage with the moment. The story of Jesus and Zacchaeus (Luke 19:1–10) offers a powerful lesson on the importance of presence and connection in transforming lives.

The Power of Presence

Zacchaeus, a tax collector, was eager to see Jesus as He passed through Jericho. Being short in stature, he climbed a sycamore tree to get a better view. When Jesus reached the spot, He stopped, looked up, and said: “Zacchaeus, come down immediately. I must stay at your house today.”

This moment was transformative. Jesus didn’t just pass by or dismiss Zacchaeus—He saw him, called him by name, and chose to spend time with him. Zacchaeus, moved by Jesus’ presence, vowed to give half his possessions to the poor and repay anyone he had wronged fourfold.

This story reminds us that true transformation happens when we are fully present with ourselves and others.

Identifying Distractions

Distractions often keep us from experiencing the power of presence. They might include:

• Constant notifications from devices.

• Multitasking instead of focusing on one task at a time.

• Ruminating on the past or worrying about the future.

Take a moment to reflect:

What distractions are pulling my attention away from the present?

How can I create space to be fully present today?

Acknowledging what’s stealing your focus is the first step to reclaiming it.

Practicing Presence

Jesus showed us that presence requires intention. Here are some ways to practice staying focused and present:

1. Start with One Task: Choose one task or conversation to focus on fully, without distractions.

2. Take a Tech Break: Set aside time to disconnect from devices and reconnect with the moment.

3. Engage the Senses: Pause to notice what you see, hear, smell, or feel to ground yourself in the present.

By practicing presence, you open the door to deeper connections, clarity, and growth.

Facing Challenges to Presence

Staying present isn’t always easy. Like Zacchaeus climbing a tree to see Jesus, it might require effort and intentionality. Old habits of distraction may try to pull you back, but each time you choose presence, you strengthen your ability to focus.

Remember, presence is a skill that grows with practice.

The Rewards of Presence

Zacchaeus’ encounter with Jesus transformed his life. He moved from being a tax collector focused on wealth to a man committed to generosity and restoration. This change happened because Jesus gave him the gift of presence.

In your own life, staying present can transform how you work, connect, and grow. It allows you to experience the richness of each moment and create space for meaningful change.

Presence brings clarity and opens the door to meaningful change.

Final Thoughts

Presence is a powerful gift—to yourself and to those around you. Like Jesus with Zacchaeus, choosing to be fully present can lead to transformation and deeper connection.

Reflection Question: What step can you take today to stay focused and present in the moment?
