What I would do - Post from Facebook

Notice of Liability - Inappropriate Content in Reading Materials

Dear First Name, 9th grade Teacher - Mr or Mrs Last Name

I hope this message finds you well. I am writing to express my deep concern regarding the content of a book that has been introduced to my child's reading materials. The book, Magic Fish, provided to my child attending in your classroom appears to promote various fairytales that revolves around a boy coming out about his sexual preferences to his dying mother.

As a parent, my role as chief decision maker and child protector, is essential to ensure that the content my child is exposed to is not only age-appropriate but also promotes values of safety, well-being, and positive self-esteem. The material in question goes against these principles and raises serious concerns about its impact on impressionable young minds.

I understand the importance of fostering creativity and imagination in children's literature; however, I firmly believe that there are alternative, more positive, and non-confusing ways to encourage creativity without endorsing sexualization of vulnerable, innocent children.

I formally request that you reconsider the selection of such material for my child and, provide alternative reading options that align with age-appropriate and socially responsible content.

My foremost requirement in availing of your services is to ensure that my child's educational setting fosters a positive and safe atmosphere that contributes to their healthy development. This includes promoting an environment free from inappropriate material or any content that could negatively impact their well-being.

I kindly request your commitment to maintaining these standards and appreciate your attention to this critical aspect of my child's education.

I appreciate your understanding and cooperation in this matter. Please feel free to reach out to let me know of your successful findings for alternative reading materials.

Your prompt reply within the next 7 calendar days is expected and highly appreciated, as swift action is crucial in addressing this matter. I trust that, with your cooperation, we can find a resolution that ensures a positive and enriching educational experience for all children under your care.

Thank you for your attention to this important concern.

Govern yourself accordingly.

Sincerely,

Follow Up: Urgent Matter Regarding Inappropriate Reading Material [2nd communication. 1st communication sent DATE, RN########]

Dear First Name, x Teacher (x = 5th grade), Mr or Mrs Last Name

I hope this message finds you well. I am writing to follow up on my previous communication regarding my concerns about the inappropriate reading material presented to the students, including discussions about self-harm and dismemberment.

Unfortunately, I have not received any correspondence from you, and it has been eight days since my initial message. As a concerned parent, the well-being and safety of my child remain my top priority. (I would probably choose the three I didnā€™t send to last time because they wouldnā€™t have seen the first letter and in order to make sense of it they would need to reach out and have a conversation. These new recipients would want to know what the first letter said and now you have got 7 people on the hook and things can get interesting.

My goal is to create these conversations because I foster the idea that we can collaborate with reasonable individuals and in doing so unite.

I would need to know what theyā€™re responding with in order to go further. The key for me would be to stay punctual with my formal communication (on paper through registered mail). Stay calm and proceed with confidence when faced with adversity.

Blessings.
